  • What is a Mental Health Treatment Plan (MHTP)
A MHTP is a plan created by you and your GP, outlining your mental health needs, what kind of support/health care you need, your treatment goals and the best options for treatment. This plan allows you to claim a Medicare rebate for up to 10 Psychology sessions per calendar year. To start with, your GP will refer you for up to 6 sessions at a time. After your first referral of up to 6 sessions, if you are seeking more sessions, your psychologist will write to your GP and request you visit them again to receive a re-referral. The GP can then refer you for further sessions. This will allow you to claim the further sessions you are eligible for (e.g. further 4 sessions), bringing you to a total of 10 sessions for the calendar year. Please see "Rebates" section for further information.
  • Am I eligible for a Rebate?
Medicare rebates Medicare rebates are for Australians experiencing mental health difficulties. Referrals must be made through a general practitioner or psychiatrist, who will assess eligibility for rebates under a Mental Health Treatment Plan (MHTP). The rebate is only available with a valid referral. The Medicare rebate is $141.85 per session, for up to 10 sessions per calendar year. The full session fee is paid by you at the time of your appointment, with the rebate amount processed directly back into your nominated bank account. To ensure your eligibility, please collect your MHTP + referral letter before your appointment at Map Your Way Psychology. Private Health Insurance If you have Private Health Insurance, you may be eligible for a psychology rebate, dependant on your health fund and level of cover/extras entitlements. Please first check with your health fund directly whether you are eligible. If eligible, Map Your Way Psychology can provide you with your invoice for claiming. Bulk billing: Map Your Way is a private clinic, and therefore does not provide bulk billing.
  • Can a MHTP be used for couples therapy?
No, MHTP's are provided for individual use only.
  • Do I have to have a referral/MHTP to attend sessions?
No. If you don't have a referral/MHCP, this just means that you will not receive a medicare rebate for your session, and will instead be out of pocket for the full session fee.

  • How much notice do I need to give to reschedule or cancel a session?
Map Your Way Psychology requires 48-hours (2-days notice) prior to your appointment. If you cancel with less than 48 hours notice 50% of the session fee will be charged. If you cancel with less than 24 hours notice, the full fee will be charged. Map Your Way Psychology accepts notification of rescheduling or cancellations of appointments via direct email to Kara. SMS cancellation or rescheduling is not accepted. Non-attendance to appointments will incur payment of the full session fee.
  • How and when do I pay for my appointment
